Our Mission

At the High Desert Center, our mission is to empower people to live sustainable lives
and contribute to a sustainable world.

But... What do you mean by 'Sustainability' anyway?

We define sustainability as the ability of individuals and communities to recognize, make, act on and learn from choices that respect the present and the future, oneself and others.

People and communities who live sustainably are those who, in a changing world, continue to find ways to lead a meaningful, balanced, and healthy life while making the world a better place for present and future generations.

To us, sustainability is more than living off the grid on a self-sufficient farm or calculating a zero-carbon footprint.   It is the ongoing practice of awareness, imagination, design, adaptability, resilience, regeneration, community, and integrity to values.  For more

How we teach it.  (the essence of our curriculum)

  • We meet, work beside and learn from people living inspiring lives.
  • We bring awareness to the practice, and we develop the process skills that are ingredients of success.
  • We take a fresh look at our own lives to understand our successes, our obstacles, our patterns, and our choices.
  • We practice!  We imagine possibility and take action, and again and again we immerse ourselves first hand in the full experience (the bliss and the fears) of identifying, choosing and living a life that is true to our priorities and values.
