At the High Desert Center, our mission is to empower people to live sustainable lives and contribute to a sustainable world. But... What do you mean by 'Sustainability' anyway? We define sustainability as the ability of individuals and communities to recognize, make, act on and learn from choices that respect the present and the future, oneself and others. People and communities who live sustainably are those who, in a changing world, continue to find ways to lead a meaningful, balanced, and healthy life while making the world a better place for present and future generations. To us, sustainability is more than living off the grid on a self-sufficient farm or calculating a zero-carbon footprint. It is the ongoing practice of awareness, imagination, design, adaptability, resilience, regeneration, community, and integrity to values. For more How we teach it. (the essence of our curriculum)
