Sustainable Living: An Exploration July 9 - August 17, 2012 For six weeks, students will experience and witness the ins and outs of sustainable living. For mature students age 14 and over. This program is offered in conjunction with Unschooling Adventures. | August 24 - November 16, 2012 This 12-week course, offered in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Biological Lab, will begin in the Colorado Highlands and travel down the Colorado River to Mexico. Along the way, the class will visit intact natural ecosystems, artificial landscapes devoted entirely to head lettuce, organic farms, large-scale dairies, large-urban areas and small country towns. The class will explore which food is produced and consumed at each place, along with the consequences of consumption/production for water, energy, biodiversity, and natural ecosystems. The course will involve working with data, including reviewing statistical techniques, developing analytical skills, and writing papers. Additionally, the course will help students develop the ability to communicate complex science to general public audiences. Throughout, students will learn and work beside expert writers and scientists. Students will receive 15 course credits through Western State College. |
